如今这个季节正是台风和飓风肆虐的时候，在我国，台风天鸽造成的影响还没有消去，台风帕卡又接踵而来，而在大洋彼岸的美国，飓风哈维已经席卷墨西哥湾沿岸allrican。可能有的人要问了，同样都是破坏力强大的风暴，为什么美国叫飓风，而中国却叫台风呢？

其实，台风和飓风都属于北半球的强热带气旋，只是因为它们产生在不同的地点，叫法才有了不同而已，关于这两者的名字称谓，通常的解释是这样的allrican：在国际日期变更线以东到格林尼治子午线的海洋洋面上生成的气旋称之为飓风，而在国际日期变更线以西的海洋上生成的热带气旋则称之为台风。

为什么以国际日期变更线为分界线呢？这是因为国际日期变更线以东的热带气旋基本上都会向东走allrican，奔向美国、墨西哥和加拿大等地，而国际日期变更线以西的热带气旋则会向西走，奔向菲律宾中国和日本等。

所以太平洋是一个可以产生台风和飓风的地方，但是在大西洋上，这样的气旋则都被称为飓风了，所以美国只会刮飓风，不会刮台风，而中国也只会刮台风，不会刮飓风。

那么为什么要给他们在名字上加以区分呢？为什么不都叫台风或者飓风呢？这里面其实有传统叫法的问题，飓风这个词源自加勒比海语的恶魔Hurican一词，也有说它是玛雅人神话中创世众神的其中一位，就是雷暴与旋风之神Hurakan。但台风一词的来源就更多了，一般认为源自希腊神话中大地之母盖亚之子Typhon，它是一头长有一百个龙头的魔兽，传说其孩子就是可怕的大风。我国一般认为"台风"是因为经过台湾才这么叫的，但这个说法却并没有什么依据，也有人说源于日语，还有人说来自中国广东话"大风"的发音，被传至国外后音译台风的发音，再次传回国内就译为台风了。
